Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any significant awards ceremony approaches, one notices a demand to include of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would board games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, and you can find room for numerous titles.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored that year
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
