Federal authorities have entered the fray in a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and potential additional obstacles.
