Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
