A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the development and management of all such projects.
This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic initiatives.
